The new European Emissions Trading System (ETS) could damage jobs Together with the Confederation of European Beet Growers (CIBE) and sugar beet processors (European Committee of Sugar Manufacturers, CEFS), EFFAT called on the Commission to take account of the fact that the priority here should be to preserve jobs and support the economies of rural areas whilst looking after the environment in line with any Commission model for a European Emissions Trading System (ETS).
The new ETS taking shape today, but which will apply from 2013 and extend beyond 2020, could endanger rural development and economic activities in rural areas unless the specificities of agro-industry sectors like beet and sugar are taken into consideration. 05/07/2010

For information : ETUC's European Day of Action- 29 September 2010 « No cuts, more growth » - European Day of Action
On September 29, to coincide with a meeting of European finance ministers, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) will organise a European Day of Action.
As European Governments move collectively to slash public expenditure, including jobs, pay and pensions, while the European economy is fragile and vulnerable to renewed recession, the ETUC is to mobilise a collective trade union response. This will be centred on a big demonstration in Brussels but the ETUC is calling on affiliates to take the maximum possible degree of action in all the countries of the European Union. This can include protest stoppages, demonstrations, meetings with Government finance ministers etc.
The ETUC is also supporting the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) world wide Day of Decent Work on October 7.

Another subcontracting scandal at Danish Crown? The German public prosecutor and tax authorities are examining serious allegations concerning Danish Crown in Germany. 2010 - European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion The Charter against precarious work, adopted by the 3rd EFFAT Congress on 20-21 October 2009 in Berlin, is a central document for EFFAT, particularly this year when the fight against poverty is at the top of the European agenda: The European Commission declared 2010 as the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. "Almost 80 million Europeans live at risk of poverty, which means they face insecurity, and go without what most people often take for granted." The number of people facing poverty is increasing, and even having work is not a safeguard any more against social exclusion, as a growing number of jobs are marginalized and do not allow workers to earn a wage they can live on. Therefore, EFFAT actively supports the European campaign and, by implementing its Charter against precarious work, will contribute to the fight against poverty and social exclusion.
